Not sure what to read next to your child? I was just surfing the web for books to put in the new nursery at our church and came across parents.com’s list. It’s one of the better lists I’ve come across with a lot of the classics we grew up with and a couple newbies. There’s a list for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and older kids. And if you still need more help, we have this one in stock: What To Read When by Pam Allyn.

I’ve sat in on quite a few book clubs. There’s often the overly vocal member, usually a mum member, and sometimes some heated discussion. So I wasn’t sure what to expect when The Young Readers Book Club gathered for the first time this past Saturday.

They chose the book (Rick Riordan’s Lightning Thief), they wrote the discussion questions,  and they led the discussion (with a little help from mom). I was amazed at their ability to critically examine the novel.

One member explained that Riordan was teaching Greek mythology when he began to entertain his young sons with stories of the gods. They compared ancient Sparta to modern America and debated warfare methods. And all of them agreed that the movie was much better than the book!

Next up for Young Readers’ Book Club: Warriors 1: Into the Wild by Erin Hunter, Saturday, March 27, 10 am.

Looking for a unique way to celebrate your child’s birthday party?

I’m a little late on posting our Valentine’s Day fun, but I didn’t want you to miss this fun idea. Jackie Ellis of OSOArtworks created Sweet Heart kits– a box of candy custom made by you for your sweetie. She is working with the Bookshelf and Gallery to create party kits–  an all-inclusive themed birthday party for your child (ages 3-10) in the beautiful gallery above the Bookshelf. We provide the space, the activities, the decorations. You provide the kids… and the cake.
